More about this scene
Although it had fallen into disrepair by the time of the Civil War, the castle was then refortified; it changed hands a couple of times during the war, and was finally slighted in 1645. It was taken over by the Ministry of Works (the ancestor of today's English Heritage) in 1959, and now has a very good little museum within the gatehouse area.
