Nostalgic memories of Birkenhead's local history

Share your own memories of Birkenhead and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Hi Mike, I seem to remember a boy that lived at no.1 or no.3 who had ginger hair; he was a friend of my brother Dennis. Can't remember the name of the sweet shop but have been searching for pictures of Hope Street or Cathcart Street. Dad used to go in the pub on the corner. Can't remember names of people, there where that many of them. Cheers, Stan Baker.
I have been away for a mere 32 years, but reading everyone's memories has brought tears to my eyes. I went to Withins Lane College in 1978 to do nursery nursing and there met my best friend Nikki Jones from Tranmere. On 17 December 2012 Nikki died in her sleep aged 50. I will forever remember her and our nights at the Chelsea Reach and our disco lessons on Friday nights.
In the early 80's my dad was walking our dog in the park when he came across an eagle. Turned out it had been stolen from Colwyn Bay Zoo. He captured it with the dog's lead, ended up in the national press and got £100 reward. My dad died last year but he will ever be remembered in print as the eagle catcher.
We moved to 192 Park Road north in 1967, next door to the shop. We used to visit our nan and aunties at No.160 and always called in to the shop for sweets, the old couple who ran the shop were really nice, they sold great ice cream. I remember the old man with white hair and specs...we moved in next door in 67 and made lots of friends. We spent our childhood in the park opposite playing football, cricket and ...see more
My dad, Billy Sinnett, worked on the docks for years when we were small. They all had a nickname, dad's was Crazy Horse or Chief. I remember him coming home from work carrying a dockers hook as they called it and he hung it up in the cupboard under the stairs.
I grew up in Tranmere, I went to Well Lane School. I started school in 1959. I would love to contact old school friends. Vague memories of early childhood - still can remember few names - where are they all now. I live in Southport now, but you never forget your roots. I had an older sister called Frances. We used to play around old Chester Road getting into all sorts of ...see more
I was born above the Bank on Jan 4th 1944. My grandmother (Elsie Hitchell), was caretaker/ cleaner of the bank and all of the upstairs accomodation came with the job. We lived there with the extended Hitchell family until about 1948, when I moved to a prefab in Rock Ferry with my parents. My grandmother lived above the Bank until she died in about 1960/61. She was a wonderful lady and I have fond memories of her.
I am a Malaysian and I did my PTS training in Arrow Hall, in 1965. With me was another Malaysian girl by the name of Ng. There was a nursing home upstairs and the lecture hall was on the ground floor. We stayed on the first floor. I remember Avril who was our room-mate. Jeanette and Agnes were among some of the students. Sorry I cannot recall their surnames. I hope to revisit Arrow park this October when I ...see more

I can remember coming back across the Mersey on the ferry boat and getting a bus home. 71a right to the top of our road. 71, a walk home from Irby Village. or the Crossville Heswall bus and walking form Pensby. I was much fitter then ......
