More about this scene
Agriculture was the dominant employer in the area, and this was often reflected in village life and facilities - note the tractor on the right of the photograph. Ancillary businesses included a newsagent, a butcher, a baker and the post office (where the white van is parked), as well as the builder R O Ayres, who proudly advertises his telephone number on his van (foreground) in the hope of attracting new customers. The tower of the church of St Mary Magdalene can be seen behind the houses on the left.
