More about this scene
The ruins of the once luxurious state rooms at Bolsover Castle. It was probably in these rooms that the Duke of Newcastle lavished thousands of pounds on entertaining Charles I. One such three-day visit by the king in 1634 is said to have cost the Duke £15,000, a phenomenal amount of money in 17th-century England.
