Bramber was once the main town of one of the Sussex Rapes, or Anglo-Saxon administrative areas, and the seat of William de Braose's Norman castle guarding the Adur gap through the Downs. By 1100 he had added a stone keep to his castle, which was built on a natural hill overlooking the Adur. Only a 75 ft high fragment and some stretches of bailey wall remain on this refreshingly unmanicured site.
