The village sits below the North Downs on the main road between Dorking and Reigate. In 1725, its then rector wrote to his bishop remarking that it had 'no chapel, no curate, no papist, no conformists, no school'. The school seen in this photograph was designed by the renowned Surrey-based architect Henry Woodyer and opened in 1862.
