Buckland, The Village 1921

More about this scene
This tranquil scene, showing the church of St Mary, tastefully rebuilt in 1860 by Henry Woodyer, and the picturesque village stores and post office, gives little hint of a gruesome legend which developed in early Victorian times around an ape-like water monster which allegedly resided at a nearby stream and was known as the Buckland Shag. This apparition was supposed to appear at midnight on what is now a section of the A25 between Dorking and Reigate. Perhaps modern road improvements have either scared it away or buried it altogether.
