More about this scene

The present Layston church, the original parish church for Buntingford, was constructed on the site of an earlier building in the 13th century, and additions were built in the 15th century. The photograph shows the beginnings of the dereliction which has taken over the nave today. Only the tower and chancel, now used as a cemetery chapel, survive. As this book is published, considerable concern is being expressed with regard to the already over-full graveyard, and its future is being actively discussed.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My great-grand parents - Charles and Sarah Roblett - married at Layston. Their daughter Dorothy Roblett married Christopher McHugh, of Archers in Buntingford. The wedding here took place some time between 1920-1940, the church was open air and they married on Christmas Eve. Chris and Dorothy had three children, Christopher, Bernadette (my mother) and John. They passed away over 20 years ago now.
