My family were at Redhill Lodge too - we were only there for a couple of weeks round about Easter 1960 and then we were moved to another place. I remember having the tiniest room and the 6 of us shared 5 beds so tightly fitted in that we could only get into them by climbing in at the bottom of the bed. The shared kitchens were huge though.
I’ve always wondered what the place was before it was used for homeless families.
I lived in Redhill Lodge from 1955 to 1960 round about that time. I were one of seven kid's we lived in the house in the court yard just by the outside toilets my dad passed away in 1960 to 1961 there.
We lived there for 5 years, the bet last room top floor, I think it was No. 27. I recall a family living in the house in the courtyard, I think their name was Grump, the eldest daughter Marion wore American Tan stockings with white stilettos - funny what you remember as a kid. I also recall a big family called the Laney’s, Shirley was my friend.
Hello Pauline! Firstly, apologies for incorrect spelling of your surname, we always thought it was Grump so thanks for the correction (Grumbt is of German origin I believe). I think we were born the same year (1949) but I’m not sure if I recall you but I do have a clear memory of Marion, I always thought she was very elegant and fashionable, I recall her working at John Ford’s. I remember Evelyn Laney too, and her sweet little sister Edwina. I can recall climbing out onto the roof at the lodge, crazy! Teresa Talbot nee Rochford
Hi Teresa, a lot of people got our surname wrong but your right it is of German origin. You probably wouldn't have remembered me as I was the middle child as yes I was born in 1949 also. Marion and I were the only girls and we had 5 brothers. I used to love it when it was bonfire night and everyone would congregate in front courtyard watching the fireworks. My dad made a trolley and all us kids used to play on it out the front (great fun) I think we were there for around six years. We were all in the same boat but we did have some good times..Pauline Edwards need Grumbt.
Hello Teresa, I was born in Edgware General Hospital right next to Redhill Lodge. I was one of the Laney family. There were eight of us three girls and five boys. I have very vague memories of living there but i do remember
being happy and always having friends to
play with and have been told many stories by
my Mum and Dad and brothers and sisters, fond memories of hard times. Mum, Dad and
Shirley have passed away but the rest of us are in contact. I will let them know about this site, Edwina Laney/Reading
