1890 The Year My Great Grand Mother Alice Maud Taylor Was Born - a Memory of Burton in Lonsdale.
My great grand mother was born in 1890 and lived in Burton in Lonsdale all her 83 years. She was my guardian after my father died (Jim Coates) at the young age of 21 in 1969.
My grandmother married Joseph Wright and lost him to the Great War. She had two daughters with him Olive my Grand Mother and Nora, She later married a Mr Booth some time after the First World War and spent har latter years caring for grand children and great grand children. She passed when I was just 6 I lived my wakening years with her just the 2 of us.
We lived in the Manor House on high street. Our neighbors were the Bradshaw family and the Earnshaws lived a few houses down. The house with the steps I always remember. Further down was Annie Tustin my god mother, Annie passed in the mid 90’s I think.
I always remember Mr. Murray at the shop down the street, he would always give me a sweet.
I often went fishing down at the river dont think I ever fought anything.
I remember a Mrs Blundell a friend of my great grandmother and a lady called Muriel across the road. The Fisher family lived across the road from us in a big house, Jane the daughter my age roughly became a children’s book author early in her life. I always remember being stung by nettles in their back garden.
I have vivid memories of the harvest festival and a village parade. Also remember the milk race passing through the village probably 1972 or so.
In 46 years since I lived there Ive only been back a few times but still remember the village fondly for its beauty and how timeless it seems.
