Girl Guide Camp 1945

A Memory of Burton in Lonsdale.

During the week the second world war ended (not sure whether it was (VE or VJ) I was camping in the village with a party of Girl Guides from Keighley, West Yorks. We were led by Miss Clough who was the Keighley Commissioner for Guides and the camp was down on the river side. We arrived by coach and I remember the driver kept pulling into lay- byes to listen to his radio to find out if the war had ended. On the Sunday morning we all went to church and when the vicar and choir walked down the aisle I immediately recognised the vicar! He had been the curate at Bingley Parish church and took many of the services at St Aidan's church in the village of Crossflatts at which I was a member of the choir. He had lovely auburn hair and if my memory is correct he was called Mr Davies. As I am now eighty five years old maybe there will not be many villagers who remember him but he was a lovely man and a great favourite with the Bingley parishioners, especially the younger ones!
Hoping someone will remember the Girl Guides from Keighley
