More about this scene
The shop on the left is Jarman's the photographers. It was designed by William Spanton in 1863 for his 'Repository of the Arts' and was owned by Harry and Oswald Jarman from 1901 to 1962. There can be very few wedding photographs taken between 1901 and 1975 that do not bear their signature. Next are Groom's stationers and booksellers run by the Groom sisters; Hilton's Shoes and Collis the jeweller occupy the building with Venetian-style oriel windows. The three businesses beyond were the garage of T H Nice, the Gallon Pot pub, and Hunter and Oliver, wine merchants, later to be Peter Dominic and now Thresher's. On the right is the length of the street rebuilt after the 1882 fire. If we stand at the same spot today, we still look out over open countryside.
