More about this scene
At the centre of the village is the ancient market cross and priory gatehouse, now owned by the National Trust. Although first founded in the 7th century by St Cuthbert, the present priory church and ruins relate to a later Augustinian community established in about 1190. It was largely destroyed after the Dissolution, but the magnificent church and gatehouse have survived.
