More about this scene

Note the inscriptions on either side of the door and the plaque above it. 'Catherine of Aragon stayed here 1501' (left): that was the year she married Arthur, Prince of Wales, who died the following year. 'King Charles II slept here 1651' (right): Charles had an anxious time in Charmouth. He was making his first attempt at fleeing to exile in France after defeat at the Battle of Worcester, but Lyme Regis skipper Stephen Limbry failed to turn up as arranged on Charmouth beach at dawn on 22 September. The disguised royal party, fearful of attracting attention, fled eastwards, and had their next narrow escape at Bridport, en route to an eventual passage from Shoreham.
