Chester, Bridge Street 1888

More about this scene
This close-up of Bridge Street gives a clear picture of the Rows for which Chester is so famous. These consist of continuous galleries above the ground-floor level giving access to other, totally separate shops. They probably started to develop in the form that we see them today as early as the 13th century. The ground-floor level of the picturesque building in the centre is now, rather unfortunately, a Burger King outlet.
