More about this scene
These galleries are unique to Chester, and are known to have existed in the 13th century. Opinion is divided as to their origins. One theory is that they might well be an echo of the Roman pattern of domestic building: a combination of apartments, workshops, and shops which were the Roman equivalent of fast-food outlets.
