Chichester, The View From The Canal 1898

More about this scene
This tiny stretch, less than a mile long, is all that is left of the grandiose Portsmouth & Arundel Canal, which linked Ford on the River Arun with Chichester and Portsmouth Harbour. It opened in 1823, but soon faced local opposition when the residents complained that seawater was seeping from it into their wells and contaminating the drinking water. The company ignored the protests, but failed to drum up trade, and the canal was derelict by the 1860s.
