More about this scene
This view shows the widest area of the market place, where most of the livestock was sold up to 1907. The Victorian building with the borough coat of arms in the pediment was erected after a public meeting: the town decided 'not only to obtain funds for the purpose of a general rejoicing but also if possible, to erect a handsome building as a Literary and Scientific Institute, which would serve as a lasting memorial'. Sir John Neeld presented the site, and the foundation stone was laid in 1887. The Jubilee Institute proved popular, along with its collection of books.
