Waites Family

A Memory of Clayton West.

Hello, I am writing here with hopes that someone may remember or know of my ancestors. I am in Canada so it is very difficult for me to research them from here. Only recently have I discovered my roots and so many of them originated in Clayton West and High Hoyland. George Waites owned a textile mill in the early 1800's - he was my great, great, grandfather. His wife was Sarah Pinder (born in Jamaica?) and his sister was Sarah Dickenson (nee Waites) whose daughter, Eliza, became mother to Weetman Pearson - that was very neat to discover. My great grandfather, George's son, was William. I am very drawn to this beautiful town and would love to know if any photos may be around...Thanks so much..Marilou Waites of Toronto

Hi there it's a long time since you left your post, but I remember well the area in Park Mill where your ancestor had his mill. As a child I used to fish in the mill dam which was associated with the mill. In my time it was known as Dysons dam - presumably the next owner of the premises. In later years the owners were the Park Mill Bleaching an dyeing company. The premises were eventually taken over and demolished.
