More about this scene
Here Frith's photographer was looking from the east end of Scott's 1864 bridge towards the ridge descending to the flatter land of Burcott and Berinsfield; the east part of the village is hidden by the trees. Obviously a popular picnic and walking site, the banks were the preserve of the Clifton and District Piscatorial Society, now less cumbersomely named Oxford District Anglers Association. Jerome K Jerome described Clifton Hampden as a 'wonderfully pretty village, old-fashined, peaceful, and dainty with flowers'.
