We can just see the spire of the church of St Michael and all Angels towering above the thatched cottage (centre). Near the porch of the church there is a stone marking the grave of William Dyke, who is reputed to have started the Battle of Waterloo when he accidentally fired his musket.

This was my grandfathers favourite inn at the time the photograph was taken. He was coachman at the Manor House at Long Wittenham a short walk along the 'Maddy' (a road from the inn to Long Wittenham following the river and very prone to flooding).
