Smuggling was a major industry in the 18th century, with vast quantities of contraband passing through little ports such as Coverack. In 1736 the Coverack Customs boat caught a smuggler carrying 150 ankers of spirits. An anker was eight and a half gallons, so the haul represented around 5,500 bottles - and that was not considered a large cargo!
