Cowan Bridge lies two miles from Kirkby Lonsdale. Charlotte Bronte and her sisters spent such a spartan childhood at the school for clergymen's daughters here that she immortalised it in her famous novel 'Jane Eyre': 'We set out cold, arrived at church colder and during service became almost paralysed'. The Rev Carus Wilson, vicar of Tunstall, established the school in 1823. A commemorative tablet is on the wall of Bronte Cottage, the first house on the right next to the old road bridge.

The house on the right of this photo was my home - Bronte Cottage. I have been told that it was once used as the coach house for the school and certainly I remember stone flagged floors to the largest room on the ground floor. To our great sadness the house was demolished in the early 1960s for the road improvements which took place at that time. I remember that I lived close to the old bridge end but this photo made me realise how close!
To the left hand side of the A65 opposite the Village Shop stands the Smithy - this is significant to me as my grandfather Thomas Glover was the village Blacksmith until his retirement. The Smithy was demolished after he retired and my parents later had a bungalow built for themselves behind where it had originally stood.
