Crowland, Abbey 1894

More about this scene
The abbey, in the Middle Ages the richest in Lincolnshire, was built on the site of the 7th-century St Guthlac's timber hermitage. It is now a fragment: the nave north aisle is now the parish church with a monumental 15th-century tower capped by a squat spire. The remains of the rest of the abbey church are a tantalising glimpse of an opulent past, while all the monastic buildings have vanished.
