I was a Staff Nurse on this ward. We were in a prefabricated building, and had to push patients to theatre with a waterproof covering over them, to protect from the weather. Quite a lot of our patients came from a local home for thalidomide children. I and my twin brother were born at Cuckfield Hospital in 1965. I went back there today for the first time in at least 30 years with my 13 year old son. It brought a tear to my eyes. The area seems very different from what I remember. Does anyone know when it stopped being a hospital and it was converted to flats and offices? Giles
I was born here in January 1956. I weighed in at 2lbs and measured just 10 inches and despite this I was a strong baby, no tubes for me, or so I'm told. My sister remembers playing on a sunken lawn outside the unit while my Mum visited me, the nurse would hold me up to the window for my sisters to see me, her name was "Auntie" Jean Brown. Ockenden Manor was held in the manor of Pangdean, and was owned by John & Mylicient Michell, a family who were Lord's of the Manor from the 13th century until the 17th century. John Michell of Ockenden Manor house who died in 1525, losing his wife, Mylicient the year before. This John & Mylicient Michell are my 14th great grandfather and mother, and making Ockenden manor my ancesteral home. Rt Hon de Mychel Wayne Quinnell
