The statue of Joseph Pease stands guard over the entrance to Northgate. Joseph (1799-1872) was the second son of Edward Pease (1767-1858), and was the first treasurer of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. He was also a major influence in the founding and development of the town of Middlesbrough, and was the first Quaker ever to be elected to serve in Parliament.
