More about this scene
Having completed the tour of Daventry town centre, we now look at some of the 20th-century housing and industrial development. This group of four photographs of the council estate show it soon after it was built in the late 1950s to early 1960s. The initial group of roads were all named after famous poets. For those unfamiliar with Felicia Hemans (1793-1835), she is most famous for the line 'The boy stood on the burning deck', from her poem 'Casabianca', written in the 19th century. In about 1812 or 1813 she lived in Daventry High Street when her husband was captain of the local militia. John Dryden, the first Poet Laureate (1658-1688) was cousin of Sir Robert Dryden, who lived in the locality at Canons Ashby. The estate was extended in the 1970s and is now known as The Headlands.
