Devizes, The View From St John's Church 1898

More about this scene
This view across to St Mary's Church clearly shows a variety of architectural styles, including the unusual curved rear of the Town Hall on the left, the ornate gabled roof the Wiltshire Friendly Society building (centre), described by Pevsner as 'Victorian-Jacobean'; and the imposing Georgian grandeur of Greystone House to the right. Built in 1731, it is considered by Pevsner as 'rather a confused design'; the interior, however, is noteworthy for its fine staircase and plaster ceilings. Next door is The Elm Tree Inn, formerly The Salutation, and dating from the 17th century. The elm tree in front was removed in 1826.
