At this time, Dymchurch was a tranquil place; it attracted the author Edith Nesbit, who wrote 'The Railway Children'. She lived in one of the two-storey terraced cottages on the right of the picture. Dymchurch's other literary son was Russell Thorndike; he penned the 'Dr Syn' series of novels, concerning the activities of Romney Marsh smugglers.
