From the start in 1895, successive councils have sought to provide facilities for recreation. In 1929 the council negotiated the purchase, at a very reasonable figure, of a large area of land owned by the Fleming family, who were the patrons of North Stoneham, and it was named Fleming Park. The pavilion in this picture was built together with a rose garden and a fountain, all perfectly managed by Harry Thornton, the ideal groundsman. In the foreground is a miniature golf course. The row of houses is in Passfield Avenue, so named after a Labour Party peer of the time.
