Eastleigh, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
Further development of the town meant further conversion of houses into shops. Note that Smith Bradbeers has moved to this corner, from Market Street (see page 25). Note also the roofline, with chimneys and upper rooms above the shops in the centre. The land on which the original Eastleigh was built belonged to Thomas Chamberlayne, and he gave the new streets names associated with his family and estate. The High Street was first given the name of his son, Tankerville.
