More about this scene

Eastley was a tithing in the large parish of South Stoneham, which was where births, marriages and deaths had to be registered. After the opening of a railway station in the neighbouring tithing of Barton (the station was called Bishopstoke after the nearest village of any size), the growing population petitioned the Government for a church of their own. In December 1868, the Queen in Council created a new ecclesiastical parish of Eastleigh; the name with its new spelling had been suggested by Charlotte Yonge, the authoress who lived in nearby Otterboume, and who made a large contribution to the cost of the new church. It was designed by G E Street, the architect of the Palace of Justice in London. After being declared redundant, the church has lately been converted into flats.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My grandparents got married here. Mrs Phillips was present.
My father passed away in 1955. I returned from National Service in Germany in time to visit him in Winchester hospital, sadly my older brother Ron was a regular soldier serving in Hong Kong and could not get back in time to see our father but was one of the pall bearers at his funeral in the parish church. If indeed it is the one at the back of the Rec, I called in the area on holiday from Australia in 1998 ...see more
