More about this scene
When the Duke of Gordon held the castle for James VII during the 'Long Siege' of 1689, there would have been few, if any, buildings between the fortress and the port of Leith. Gordon surrendered the castle on 13 June 1689 owing to sickness and acute shortages of food and water. During 1988-91, excavations unearthed the remains of some of the garrison from this siege. None of the skeletons showed signs of wounds, but all appeared to have died from disease.
