More about this scene
This was the site of many an execution and the location of the Porteous Riots in 1736. John Porteous was appointed captain of one of the companies employed to keep the peace. At a riot following the execution of a man named Robertson, Porteous ordered his men to fire on the crowd. He was later taken into custody, tried and condemned to death, but a stay of execution was granted. On 7 September, a mob broke into the jail and lynched him in the Grassmarket.
