More about this scene
This must be the best-known view in Essex. Where would manufacturers of calendars be without it? The squat church-tower, the steadily clambering roofs, and the central pond all combine to make a satisfying, unsophisticated scene. In the foreground is the Old Poor House: note its original 16th-century chimneys and casements.
