More about this scene

The coming of the railway to the town in 1843 not only sparked the massive increase in people arriving from London, seventy-one miles away, en route for the Continent, but also Folkestone's growth as a fashionable resort. These stately Victorian houses were part of the huge process of building development that ensued. In the distance is the Palace Theatre, now re-christened the Leas Pavilion.

Garden House Hotel

My grandparents, Kenneth Gordon and Mavis Lyne Smith, opened this hotel in 1923. The money came partly from Mavis' mother, Harriet, who had been widowed in Barbados c.1897 and was left a substantial amount of money. Harriet purchased the Clifton Hotel and ran it until 1933.

Folkestone Swimming Pool
My mum also worked at the swimming pool in the early sixties and I rented out the swimming costumes . I remember Ted and miss Tyrrell was the manageress
Folkestone Open Air Swimming Pool.

Old Folkestone High Street
Memories? Many! Worked on the refurbishment of some of the shops on the left of the picture. Often went to the 'pictures' at the Central Cinema in George lane up the top. My late wife worked as secretary for the manager of Plummers at the top. Pre WW2 we used to play up and down the High Street and up onto the Bayle. Then down into South Street. My Grandad And Folkestone Harbour
i remember my grandfather working in the security box at the entrance of folkestone harbour, i remember my grandmother would take me down to him during the morning to take his sandwiches, i would sometimes have to stay with him there because my mother had a long term illness so nan and grandad helped out by looking after me when dad was working or visiting my mum, my grandmother used to work at ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
