Bensham Memories Early 1960s
A Memory of Gateshead.
I attended Victoria Rd school and then redheugh junior school, my Gran Jane Turner lived on Derwentwater road and her family percy, Doreen, Elsie, Jenny and Florrie , my mam all attended lady Vernon school, sadly they are all gone now. I have great memories of playing in Woodsies park, kyle Lane Dairy and of course dead mans arch, great in the snow and in the summer I have ruined many pairs of shoes coming down it sitting on a book on top of a roller skate.
We lived in Victoria Road with my dad Cyril, he came from a large family in the Saltwell road area again sadly I don't think any of his siblings are left (apologies if there are). I had a very happy childhood, backlanes and trying to guess the bounce of a cricket ball on a cobbled lane , no wonder dentists were so busy.
I cant remember the names of any of my teachers at Victoria road but at redheugh I can remember the headmaster Mr Simpson, the science teacher Mr Allison who I thought must have died many years ago but I saw him in his little 3 wheeler car about 8 years ago. I would love to hear from anyone who knew either the Turner family or the Mitchell family.
