Share your own memories of Gateshead and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Tony Stafford. I lived in Gateshead from 1954 to 1961. For several years my friends and I attended Shipcote Baths most Saturday mornings, we learned to swim, dive, socialise, etc. Abiding memory is of staying in until, teeth chattering with cold, getting dried and hurrying over the road to a small cafe - where for twopence you could buy a bap filled with hot gravy. I also learned lifesaving there and took the various badges at swimming classes organised by the Royal Lifesaving Society.
I was born at 50 Milling Street in 1955. I had my Auntie and Uncle living a few doors down. I was one of 6 kids so there were 8 of us crammed into our upstairs flat. The toilet was outside and downstairs in the backyard, while the tin bath hung on the wall outside!! How life has changed for young families today in 2017. Life was very tough back then but it made us stronger and so grateful for the good life we ...see more

I lived on Milling St until I was a year old in 1953. My grandma and grandad Jimmy and Ethel McCombie lived over the Co-op shop. We used to go back there every year for our summer holidays until the mid 60's. God knows how the 11 of us crammed in there with them but they were the happiest times of my life bar none. I'm sure that there were some unfriendly people there like everywhere, but I have to say if there were I never encountered any.

Hello. Newbie here. Found site during an attempt to clear up some confusion on a Teams, Gateshead FB page. Is anyone out there an old pupil of Redheugh School, in Prest Street, during 50s and 60s? If so, you might be able to help. Was it the case that R took in mixed infants at 5 and then, at some point, kids moved up into the junior school, which was separate girls and boys; and at the same age took in ...see more
Born in 1934 I attended Rose Street school in the Teams.. I'd like to know if anyone else remembers those times, during the war, - the air-raid shelters, the gas masks that had to be carried all the time, the parcels from Canada that were distributed at the school ,orange juice, cod liver oil and only brown bread. Mainly is anyone from my class who left school in 1949 still out there? My former name was Greenwood and I'm now living in Australia.
When I was married at 18 we managed to inhabit a flat in NEWALL TERRACE TEAMS and our neighbour was a character called Curly Smith who was well known in the area , salt of the earth saved my sons life when he fell into the gut which ran at the rear of his house. I also ...see more
