Alger & Blackmore Hardware Shop No 28 Westgate

My parents rented the Alger and Blackmore family house from about 1947/8 until about 1952/3.I as my family home as a child.I remember Mr Sam Blackmore and Mr George Blackmore quite well, as well Humphries the shop manager, Miss Harmer the accounts ;lady, and Jeff Vallander who I think was in charge of the behind the shop supplies etc. It was a magical house for me- huge, with a cellar, downstairs kitchen and dining room, lots of bells for servants, a wonderful main room on the first floor, box rooms and big bedroom on the second floor with a four poster. I found and read several of Dorothy Blackmore's school books, and went on to her school, The High School for Girls Denmark Rd Goucester.

Hello Marion. How interesting to see your memories. I don't know where the family house was situated, I only visited the shop. The folks you recall will be buried at Tredworth, plot 4549NG. I visited recently & found it hard to read the inscriptions though. Have you seen the re-creacted shop in the museum? I gave my A & B papers to Gloucester Records some years ago. My grandparents, the Reed family, lived at 85 Denmark Rd at that time so you must have walked right past them most days. Small world, eh?

The house was behind and above the shop.Big house but.no garden,bathroom or heating( except fireplaces in every room).I.now live in a big Victorian house with 4 floors including a cellar as at 28 Westgate St , but wth bathrooms ,central heating and a garden but still feel 28 Westgate St was home!
