Until the railway arrived, only 35 years before this photograph was taken, Grange-over-Sands was little more than a fishing village, looking out across the Kent estuary to the rest of Lancashire. No longer reliant on a hazardous route across the sands, the town quickly grew, catering for the well-to-do, who came here to live or take their holidays.

This picture I believe was taken from Woodheads. You can compare it with an earlier photo of 1894 of 'Grange over Sands from Woodheads' (photo ref 34123). It is interesting to see that the land below Woodheads was still unbuilt upon at 1921 although a new house has appeared on what looks like Highfield Road. In 1908 the Woodheads Estate had land sloping down to Fernleigh Road and Kentsbank Road. I ...see more
We were married here in 1994.
Is that Yewbarrow Lodge (the original one) in the background? Hit by incendiary bombs in 1941, and burnt badly. We used to play in the remains as children - Sadly SLDC didn't rebuild as per Colonel Porritt's wishes, and now although serving a great purpose as a nursing home, is a ghastly eyesore.
