This fisherman is in reflective mood as he sits on his boat, the 'Dewdrop', and looks out over the fast-expanding township of Grange-over-Sands. Many wealthy business families from industrial Lancashire settled here as it became a fashionable seaside resort in the middle years of the 19th century.

Woodheads Estate History

This picture I believe was taken from Woodheads. You can compare it with an earlier photo of 1894 of 'Grange over Sands from Woodheads' (photo ref 34123). It is interesting to see that the land below Woodheads was still unbuilt upon at 1921 although a new house has appeared on what looks like Highfield Road. In 1908 the Woodheads Estate had land sloping down to Fernleigh Road and Kentsbank Road. I ...see more

Yewbarrow Lodge

Is that Yewbarrow Lodge (the original one) in the background? Hit by incendiary bombs in 1941, and burnt badly. We used to play in the remains as children - Sadly SLDC didn't rebuild as per Colonel Porritt's wishes, and now although serving a great purpose as a nursing home, is a ghastly eyesore.
