More about this scene
Yeldham Oak - seen here in the background - is now a hollow stump held together with cement and iron bands. These accoutrements were provided by public subscription in 1949, when the oak was already reputed to be a thousand years old. A new tree had been planted next to it in 1863, to commemorate the Prince of Wales's wedding.
