More about this scene
The sad remains of this once great tree have suffered further since this photograph was taken. The branches have now gone, with only the trunk remaining. Its origins are unknown, but by 1777 it appeared on maps as the Great Oak. It was still alive in 1860, and had a girth of almost 30ft and a height of over 80ft. Another tree known as the Young Oak was planted nearby in 1863.
