More about this scene

Further up into the Market Place from G66002, we see the town's library at number 14 Market Place (left) before its move to new premises behind Westgate in the early 1960s. Next door is Arthur Routledge, an auctioneer; beside him, over half a century on from 1899, Walter Willson's service is still smiling on Guisborough. On the extreme right, at number 15 Market Place, is R S Pallister's butcher's shop and at number 17 was Elizabeth's, a ladies' and children's outfitter (just out of picture). Both shops were demolished and rebuilt in a modern style in the early 1970s.
