More about this scene

These attractive ivy-clad ruins are not as ancient as they look: they are part of the castle constructed as a folly by Walter May along with his 170 foot high tower. Such Gothick confections were very popular with more eccentric landowners at the end of the 18th century. Demolition was begun in 1951, but was almost immediately stopped following protests by the local artist Bernard Hailstone.

A Selection of Memories from Hadlow

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Hadlow

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Hi, I would love to hear any memories of J and G Day. I have a photo of my late grandfather, Benjamin Stevenson, alongside a sack of produce. He sadly died whilst working out in the fields and I would love to know more.
My grandfather George Edward Knight was born in 1932, he was put in an orphanage somewhere in or around Hadlow, he also went to a school for boys, at age 13 he had an apprentership with a J Wood as a painter. After this he went to war. Any infomation would be great as he has dementia and the memories are getting worse. His nickname was (Ian).
