St John's, which is the old parish church dating from the 12th century, is on the right-hand side almost surrounded by warehouses, factories and the railway. Halifax is also where English toffee was invented, and it was here in 1934 that Percy Shaw produced the first cats' eyes, or to give them their proper name, reflecting road studs.
