Hanwell 1961

A Memory of Hanwell.

The sixties arrived slowly. Stacies mans shop had Beatle and Mersey Jackets in the window. In West Ealing, Kays Court hairdressers advertised, jump on the E type bus and come down for a cut and dry in our new unisex department. F H Rowse department store closed. The Red Lion at the top of Studley Grange Road never seemed to acknowledge the sixties, sadly it is now closed. Of course 1961 saw the start of the Hanwell Carnival. I was working at Turriff Building in Brentford for an airline, plenty of money and a feeling of well being were all around. St Thomes youth club was a little haven on Sunday night, Ruth, Nina, and many other names spring to mind. Sainsburys were in Hanwell Broadway, you were served at counters for cheese, meat, and coffee etc and then went to pay at the end of the shop in a sort of cashiers. Not a lot of traffic was about, and people dressed smartly, especially the girls, (the mini skirt was not yet in, or jeans come to that).

Hi Nick, would you know the name of a furniture shop/s on the Uxbridge Road Hanwell back in the 1960's.
From Hanwell clock they was situated about half way down the hill towards The Viaduct pub, on the same side.
I think it was between York Avenue and Half Acre Road.
There were about 3 or 4 shops all joined together, each with their own separate front doors.
The awnings were pulled down and most of the stock was put out onto the pavement.
It was owned by Mr & Mrs Bishop. Might have been "Brent Hill Stores"??
