More about this scene
Sixty years and two world wars on from the photograph of 1906, the late 18th-century house on Church Hill has been demolished and replaced by the War Memorial Building, designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1921, built in remembrance of almost 700 old Harrovians who fell in the First World War. Their names are recorded in the Golden Book, housed within the building. Fronting Old School and the War Memorial Building is an attractive series of balustrades and steps by Sir Edwin Lutyens of the 1930s. On the extreme left is Druries by C F Hayward, a building said to be a favourite of John Betjeman.
