Suntrap School, Hayling Island

A Memory of Hayling Island.

My Dad Ray New recalls being sent to Suntrap School, Hayling Island round about 1948, as he was "delicate". He would have been about 9-10 years old. He recalls helping to manually drain the chests of asthmatic children. He has a photograph of a boys' cricket team from those days and in it he believes is Mr Gough, and another teacher who played cricket at county level for Hampshire. There are a number of boys in the picture, Dad doesn't remember their names but says one was from Tottenham and had a skin complaint and he thinks asthma as well. He also remembers getting a big fright when he saw a boy called Cedric from their dormitory who slept with his eyes open. The first time he saw this he thought Cedric was dead! He was relieved to see him alive the next morning.
I will try to post the photograph on this site as it is really clear.
My Dad has been really excited to read other people's memories of this place.

I remember Mrs Higgins and a girl called Julie (she had a broken arm). and a Shirley Willis and a Carole she had dwarfism (I hope I haven't offended anyone) I remember getting the slipper most nights coz I would sing quietly to get myself to sleep. I also would sleep walk. i would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
