Where Did All The Old Houses Go?

A Memory of Hockley.

I remember the old house called "Restville" 101 Greensward Lane. Thee old ladies lived there from the 1930's to about 1960 when it was knocked down to build three new houses. It was next door to the first Doctors and I used to go to the post box on the corner to post letters. Had to get the bus from across the road to Rayleigh church where we used the old hall (now a restaurant) as a classroom before Greensward School was built. Teacher looked like Margaret Rutherford! Greensward school was best ever. Mr Pope made Penny Burridge sit next to me to stop her talking, shame I was so shy and timid! Left school at 15 to go to work when we moved to Southend. Still remember Miss Riley but can't remember who the Science teacher was. Who was the boy making a guitar in Mr Wilson's wood work class, and did ever play in a local band. On Sports day they were testing the PA system by playing The Searchers "Sweets for my Sweet' and The Four Seasons "Sherrie" so every time I hear those songs it reminds me of those days in class looking out of the window!

Science teacher would either be Mrs Warren or Mr Mayes probably.

As well as Mr Creevy (Head) The teachers that I can recall, that reigned during my tenure ('61 - 66) were Fiery Fred Furnace (Head of Maths), Osborne (English), Mayes (Physics), Neckless Davis (English) Rev Davies (Guess), Tramp Davies (Geography & Social Studies), Tombs (P.E. and French), Milson, (Woodwork) The great John Taylor (Metalwork), Bad breath Moore (Technical Drawing), Pope (Geography & Social Studies), Balaam (English ), and the lovely Mr Warren.(Science and Art)

The female teachers I recall were Miss Main (Music). Miss Silverdale (Art), Miss Riley (Domestic Science and needlework) and the wonderful Mrs Warren (Science) and Mrs Souter ( Maths).
I also recall a very attractive and sexy young French teacher (Well I WAS 14, you know) that stayed for a term or two and I am fairly sure she took French

I also remember Mr Creevy's Old CA Bedford Dormobile whilst Mr Moore had a black Moggy.
